Why do we have a sex drive?

Why do we have a sex drive? That is biologically imprinted into us. Creatures with no sex drive do not have sex, and thus they suffer extinction. Isn't evolution wonderful?

Why are you asking an atheist forum about the lovemaking, pleasurable, and orgasmic aspects of sex? Why not go to a sex forum? Why not just Google "what happens to our bodies at orgasm"?

We are atheists, not experts on the biological aspects of sex.

Why don't you go to a sex forum, get educated, and then come back as an educated atheist?

Or he could just borrow my extensive collection of "Penthouse" and "Hustler" magazines. Oh, and before you jump to any conclusions, it's not what you think. I collect them only for the joke sections. They're hilarious.

lol. Anyway, I was trying to get to heart of love making, not just ordinary sex in general. I have had amazing making love experiences, so much better than just sex, it was not even comparable. Made me believe in soulmates, a deeper connection, true love and all that. Pretty powerful stuff that I think helps us all have a stronger sense of God, eternal love, eternal life etc

I understand that mutual attraction fueled by hormones and the chemical releases from sex can be fun. But why inject god into the equation?

We understand the psychology of attraction, love, and loyalty, also the chemical reactions involved. So why invent a new level of complexity when it is not required? It is psychology and biology, not religion that gets our rocks off and creates new bonds.

Metaphor? Made myself laugh anyway, then again I had a half day and am pretty drunk.

"Again, evolution is just a process, and is not the first cause of life, food, sex or anything else. Back to school with all of you."

Yes, evolution is a process. But this process of evolution is what determines what lives and dies, what species survive and what go extinct. And driving survival is for a species/organism to adapt with new mutations. if being able to heal enhances survival, then that trait is passed along.

Our intellect, appetite, the shape of our bodies, how we think, the chemicals running through our bodies, all of that is determined by evolution.

We do not have to use the failed "first cause" argument, these days we have a very good understanding how life came to be, how we evolved and developed.

You have a predilection to inject god into everything, while common sense tells us that a god is not necessary for any of that.

A process cannot determine anything. There has to be a life force with intelligence to determine anything.

I can explain the process of evolution, what it determines and how it does it. There does not have to be a "life force with intelligence" to determine things. In fact, that stuff is invented and cannot stand up to scrutiny. And I will start with ...

Prove that there is a "life force with intelligence".

Because I can prove evolution.

Argumentum ad ignorantiam

Argumentum ad ignorantiam again. Evolution explains the origins of species, not the origins of life. Your use of the phrase "first cause" is obviously a begging the question fallacy, as you have yet to present a rational argument for a first cause. To be fair it is clear you don't know what rational means, I mean literally.

"Back to school with all of you."

For not making a claim you keep dishonestly asserting we have made, you're consistent I'll say that, and that is the only thing I can say about you that doesn't involve a copious use of vituperations.

Sheldon's picture
It's not luck, natural

It's not luck, natural selection is a relentless process driving evolution and the survival of species fittest for their environment.

If you think a species without a sex drive can survive then it's hard to know how to address that level of stupidity.

"I meant the actual experience itself. What is causing all that pleasure at the time we are experiencing it?"

Pleasurable nerve endings, and chemical reactions in your brain. Well, in most people's brains anyway, who knows where your chemicals react..

@Senta Re: "Is that why you are the tin man who has no heart?"

*chuckle*... That actually made me giggle a little bit.... *big goofy smile while typing*... The concept of "the heart" is actually precisely why I picked the Tin-Man. (Well, that, and the fact that "Tin-Man" was a nickname given to me a few decades ago.) Funny thing about the heart, you may be interested to know, by the way. What I personally consider "the heart" is an overall sense of sympathy, empathy, compassion, and a self-motivated drive to never give up. And over the years I have learned that with most people, it is all or nothing. They either have a heart full time, or they don't have any heart at all. And I have known and encountered many of each. And then there is the category in which I fall with just a rare handful of others out there. I have the ability to be both. Yes, I prefer to be kind and caring in day to day life. Makes living so much easier, and helps to make the world a better place, at least within the tiny portion of it I occupy. However, under certain circumstances, I have the ability to turn off those feelings as easily as flipping a light switch if necessary. The "heart" gets disconnected, and there will be zero emotions involved in whatever "task" I may be having to handle under those certain circumstances. And when that task is complete, the switch gets turned back on and I go right back to being good ol' happy-go-lucky me. So, yeah, there have been times (and there may be times in the future) when I have had no heart. Thanks for noticing... *grin*...

Damn, these threads get so

Damn, these threads get so long. Affection, Love, Bonding are all evolutionary traits of human beings. Human beings do not have fangs, scales, leathery skin, claws, sharp teeth, or the ability to camouflage. Humans are not as fast ad most predictors, they can not fly, they can't out swim sharks or crocodiles. Humans do not have the stealth of lions or tigers. A human being alone in the wild is little more than a walking hamburger. And the greatest punishment aside from death that any small clan of ancient humans could impose on another human being aside from death would be banishment.

Attachment in the form of love is a survival mechanism in the human psyche. We are herd animals. We bond for self preservation. We bond for the benefit of the tribe, clan, community, AND CONGREGATION.
Those of us who are incapable of bonding are now locked away in prisons. Those of us who steal from others, treat others badly, or can not function socially are still REMOVED FROM THE CLAN. These are the ones left to the wild where they can not breed. Only those with the capacity to care and love are permitted to continue existing. It is our evolutionary ability to bond and form loving relationships that has allowed us to survive. We are the last species of Homo-erectus on the planet. 6 other species have died off and evolutionists tell us it is specifically because of their lack of ability to bond, form loving relationships and communities.

LOVE IS A SURVIVAL MECHANISM IN OUR SPECIES. Anything else you attribute to it is a manufactured idea of your own thinking.
